A prosthetist, as defined by The American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics is basically a person or individual who is able to use his or her skill and design and measure the prosthesis as prescribed by a registered doctor in an area.They assist and help to formulate the prosthesis prescription. This is needed at times when the different parts of a body of a patient are lost in some mishap and they need to be replaced. So a prosthetist is not only certified individual to do the prosthesis of upper and lower limbs.
Need for Prosthetist?
There are hundreds of patients in the world with a chronic or current problem with their limbs and joints. This could be due to many reasons, the malnutrition or any accident can cause patients to lose the power in their muscles, and they are not able to use their limbs normally, therefore, they have rely on the artificial limbs for their survival and to beable to live a normal life. These type of patients can only live normally again and do their work and perform their responsibilities well again only unless they are provided with the suitable tools and artificial limbs that enable them to use their body again and achieve mobility. This way, the productivity of the patients and their work power increases , they can do things that they cannot do otherwise living as handicaps.
Responsibilities of Prosthetist
Prosthetist is a most important and qualified person of the society and a valuable member for the medical team in any medical organization.They perform the full body examination of the patients who come to them with some sort of abnormality in their movements. They do analysis of the situation and they predict the right reason for their disability. Now their job does not finish, they have to do treatment like an operation or supply an artificial body part like an artificial leg, a limb or a foot to the patient in order to rid them of their disability.
They have to plan their operations very well before the treatment of patients. They have to take suggestions from other senior and experienced doctors who have much knowledge of physical rehabilitation. They make a perfect plan for their patient in any case so that they provide them the best possible solution for their problem. They find out how an artificial limb or body part can affect a patient in positive or negative ways. They have to predict their effectivity and make a complete record of the patient;s history. They also have to take care of patients at the time of diagnosis and treatment.
They must have great skills in terms of communication and coordinating with their patients and other medical staff. They should be able to take personal interest in the welfare of patients be able to work as a team player for delivering positive results. They also make the artificial limbs and body parts for the patients, then they test them and closely examine their working. They perform the duties of Orthotic technicians who can competently judge the working of artificial machinery, plastic, wood, and limbs made of other metals.
