A paramedic is a healthcare professional, predominantly in the pre-hospital and out-of-hospital environment, and working mainly as part of emergency medical services (EMS), such as on an ambulance. The scope of paramedic and their responsibilities are however different in many different countries of the world, but their general capabilities to make the decisions about the patients and deal with the emergency situations is same. Paramedic services are covered and protected by the law and the regulatory bodies in different countries.
Duties and Functions of Paramedic Staff
A paramedic staff is referred to as a healthcare professional who can work in the hospital as well as the out of hospital environment. Basically, they are a team or team members of the emergency medical services EMS and they take the patients out or into the ambulances during the emergency times. The scope and practice of paramedics vary between the different countries of the world, it was developed as a profession in the United States in 1970s when paramedics were given recognition and they were generally accepted as the key roles in the emergency services squad. Since then, this profession has been undergoing constant changing and emerging as the most challenging professions in the world.The profession has developed gradually in the United States over the last few decades and still growing number of young and enthusiastic students are taking interest in this profession. The paramedic field evolved in the 1970s and 80s when the young paramedics were riding on their bicycles in Los Angeles and providing emergency services according to their job.
The physicians and doctors have taken a lot of interest in paramedics as well, a lot of research has been done into this profession due to which recent changes have made it into a totally different profession. The way paramedics worked in the early days were too different from the modern days of 21st century. Pre-written protocols were developed by the medical professionals to make the work smooth and easy for paramedics. In United Kingdom, the ambulances became municipal services after the world war 2, the paramedics were given protection and are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council HCPC. In the United States, a paramedic staff has to take at least a 2 year vocational training or a college degree in paramedics to become a professional. Many colleges have opened to provide quality training and education related to paramedics and they are offering college associate degrees.

The paramedics have grown into a more formal and popular profession these days.The paramedics have also formed their own professional bodies in various parts of the world, they are free to set their own procedures to suit them best. They are employed and given jobs in many types of organizations, that depends on an organization structure what type of duties they have to perform there. The skills required by a paramedics are also different in different parts of the world, for example, they must possess strong skills when a patient suffers a cardiac arrest. They can play an important part in saving the lives of heart patients with quick and effective tactics.
