LSD is caused by a large DNA virus, genus Poxvirus, family Poxviridae, subfamily Chordopoxvirinae, the most dangerous viruses to animals.

The calf will become ill when it is about three months old and will show signs such as lameness, fever, swelling of the mouth, ears, eyes, and feet, and a rash. It is important to note that the infection is not fatal for the calf, but instead, causes it to be in poor health for its life.

The first clinical signs of LSD are redness of the ears and nose and a slight reddening of the mucous membranes of the mouth, eyes, and rectum.
